June UPDATE 2025

1.     Events to watch out for in June:

4th – More T Vicar (10am) with Holy Communion (11am) at St Marys.

8th – Pentecost Sunday.  There will be a Benefice Communion service at St Johns at 10am as well as a Family Worship service at St Marys.  Afterwards there will be a Pentecost Picnic in St Charles Field, Grange from noon.  This is open to everyone and it would be wonderful  to join together with our brothers and sisters in this Churches Together event.  Baby Beatrix is being christened at noon in St Marys.

11th - More T Vicar (10am) with Holy Communion (11am) at St Johns.

14th – Reuben & Mylo are being christened at 11am in St Marys.

18th - More T Vicar (10am) with Holy Communion (11am) at St Marys.  This is followed by the Community Lunch

21st/22nd – St John’s Patronal Weekend.  There is a Strawberry Tea at church from 2pm on Saturday and there will be a celebration patronal Service in church at 10am on Sunday.

25th - More T Vicar (10am) with Holy Communion (11am) at St Johns.

28th/29th – St Mary’s Community Day from noon until 4pm.  On Sunday there will be one benefice service in St Marys.

So, lots for us to be praying for and to be getting active with this month.  And, as ever, should you or anyone you know wish to have a visit from me please do get in touch.

2.     Mid-Week Study: The folks who joined me on the Growing on the Frontline course seemed to enjoy the fellowship so I am planning another series for small groups based on The Sermon on the Mount.  It will probably follow a similar format of 1 meeting for each church and 1 on Zoom.  There are 12 sessions but I think this will be spaced out over a longer period (perhaps 4 months).  If there is interest it can begin in July.  Please let me know if there is any interest.  Thanks   

 

3.     Benefice Prayer: I know many of you are already part of prayer groups, which is terrific.  Here I am simply offering an option / another option to gather and pray for our churches in the benefice, as well as other issues we are holding in our hearts. To start it will be monthly (1st Saturday in the month 10am – noon*)    

June 7 @ St Marys, July 5 @St Johns, Aug 2 @ St Marys 

*If the timing doesn’t work please let me know.  This can be changed.

Update - September 2024

Dear friends. I hope you have all enjoyed some rest over July & August.  I feel as if I had managed some times of relaxation & refreshment ... and then we brought a new puppy into the house!!!  Eddie is a 3 month old Border Collie who, along with 'big brother' 7 year old Kirkbie is bringing much excitement to the vicarage. On 1st September both churches (St Mary's in Allithwaite & St John the Baptist in Flookburgh) merge to become one group, or benefice to use the legal term.  I will be vicar of both parishes.  We will, of course, seek to continue the work of sharing the Good News story of Jesus with our other Anglican friends as well as our ecumenical partners on the Cartmel Peninsula.  But, I would say our top priority is to be God's 'hands & feet' in our immediate, local community.  Let us, by the way we live our lives, encourage the world weary to be intrigued by whatever it is that makes us different to them.  As our church communi...

Summer Update for the parishes of St Marys & St Johns - 2024

Dear friends of both St Marys and St Johns. I've been in post since early March.  There has been quite a lot of 'getting stuck in' as well as a fair bit of sitting back & watching what is already going on.  As a family we have obviously been hit with the death of my father at the end of May (& if I have said to you before - A huge thank you for your cards, kind words, prayers etc, they have meant a lot). So, what is this update?  There is already quite a lot of information being circulated and I am not trying to compete with any of that.  I will be trying not to duplicate information (although inevitably that will happen).  In my last job I would usually send out something, probably on average once a month, and it usually came to me at a random period in the week so would get emailed out as and when.  Paper copies would be prepared for anyone who doesn't use the Internet, which could be collected from church.  I am, however, conscious of inform...

May Update 2025

  Welcome to May .   Another busy month in the life of the church. Bank holidays and ‘getting away’ becomes an important part of our routines.   If you are able to be getting away for a week or so I pray that it will be a balance of adventure and rest …travel well!   In May the country remembers 80 years since VE Day.   There will be acts of thanksgiving in various places, including this benefice so please keep your eyes peeled.   Towards the end of the month (29 th ) the Church remembers the Ascension of Jesus back to His Father (Mark 16).   Our churches will hold a service to mark this occasion …again, watch this space!   Both church communities are gearing up for special events in June (Allithwaite’s Community Day & Flookburgh’s Patronal Weekend).   As ever, there will always be help needed to enable these things to happen so please see what you can do to help bless this beautiful part of God’s world.
